Surveys - Induction Task

From the first graph I can see that free music is the most popular thing to use when it comes down to listening to music.

From the second graph I can see that trap and house are the most popular genres.

From the third graph I can see that most people wont spend more than £10 on music.

Composition Task - Induction Task

In my remix of come together I changed the drumming on it to make it funkier and have more swing.  After making my own drummer and setting up the drums I added the drum roll that a lot of people recognise from the original into my music. This allowed the song to come across in a different light and have a different affect on the listener. I also removed the vocals because I feel like the original didn't really fit with my version and made it sound out of place. Also I made it so instead of a bass doing the hook that everyone knows from the song I made it so it was a Cello doing this hook. This added a classical feel that changed the feel of the music. In my original composition I made it so the chord progression was very simple and consistent meaning the drums and the bass line where the thing the audience were listening to. This meant instead of the audience hearing a simple melody carried by some chords they were hearing a bass line that was being carried by the drums. All of this song was very simple meaning its easy to listen to and doesn't require a lot of concentration. It was in key and didn't have any chord changes. The only thing that was changed during the song was when instead of the piano and trombone playing the chords I used just the trombone and let them ring out with just the drums.

I used a piano because I feel like it is the best thing to know what chords you are going to use as well as the classical feel it gives to the music. This classical feel is also contributed to by the trombones I use along side the piano. I like the sound of the trombone so I allowed it to overpower the piano. One thing I could've added to my work was a melody as well as some different chords

Gig reviews - Induction Task

Performance One - Music Performance

The music performance started off quite slow and not necessarily boring just not very energetic meaning the audience wasn't really reacting to the music. But as the performers got more comfortable the audience started interacting more clapping with the beat or cheering. The audience would encourage people who were nervous meaning that some sort of relationship had been built.

A lot of the performance consisted of a shortened version of songs generally including a verse and the chorus. This was good because it took pressure off of the musicians as well as if members of the audience didn't like the song or didn't enjoy that particular performance, a new song would be coming up in a couple of minutes meaning people weren't going to get bored.

The standout performances were either when Billie Jean (Michael Jackson) or On and On(Erykah  Badu). This is when the show began to pick up its pace and the audience started responding to the music more. Both of these are standout moments largely due to the vocal performances done by the various people who were on stage. Everyone who sang on both of these songs created there own style for each song and made it unique but not to the point where the actual meaning of the song was lost and it just became a normal cover anyone could put on youtube.

Overall I felt like the vocals were the main presence on stage as well as some of the drumming done in the earlier parts of the concert and towards the end. One thing that could've been done better in my opinion was the guitar solos as some of them felt out of time or had missing notes. This can throw off the performers as well as the audience. Another thing I felt that could've been changed was possibly using a wider variation of instruments. This would've created a different feeling and overall atmosphere.

Performance Two - Performing Arts(dance and drama)

This performance consisted of a dance act that was done at the beginning that was very abstract and different to what I was expecting. The fact that it was abstract meant it could be perceived in different ways meaning it was unique to each person. When I couldn't understand what was going on someone else might've experienced a dramatic performance.

The actors were always facing the audience and projected there voices very well. This meant the audience understood what was going on and good engage with the audience more. Not many mistakes happened and any that did didn't affect the overall performance.

The most notable performance was the 2nd one where a collection of different scenarios occurred performed by a large group of people but each scenario generally didn't include more than 5 people. These scenarios included a mix of humour and also social problems. If the performance was too dark and deep it might have ruined the mood for the entire show so it was a good idea to throw in a joke every so often.

The final performance was a preview from Romeo and Juliet(the prologue). They generally stuck to the script meaning it was performed in the way Shakespeare had intended in terms of the script but they threw in a few modern references for comedic moments and used contemporary music.

Overall I felt like the performance went well and was enjoyable even though it isn't necessarily something I like.

Album Presentation - Induction Task

The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses

The self-titled album The Stone Roses is to many one of the best albums to come out of the 80s and England in general. The Stone Roses formed in 1983 when the Madchester movement was in full swing. Great bands were coming out of Manchester consistently in the 80s and 90s but bands like The Smiths, Joy Division and The Stone Roses were considered the main contributors that paved the way for bands that came about later like Oasis. Ian Brown and John Squire gave their listeners creative lyrics and jingly guitar riffs that continue to impress people today due to how complex some are. Then you had Mani on bass and Reni on drums who added a funky and dance feel to the music that allowed more people to listen and take part in the music. Fools Gold is a good example of this idea, it features drums that have a nice groove as well as a bassline that just seems to get better and is instantly recognisable.

The artwork for the album is another thing that makes it iconic as it features a painting that was done by John Squire and heavily inspired by Jackson Pollock. Messy and colourful similar to The Stone Roses themselves, the album cover became a part of what made The Stone Roses so unique.

I Am The Resurrection

The Stone Roses also became known for being arrogant due to song names like I wanna be adored and I am The Resurrection. Another factor that contributed to this arrogant persona would be how difficult they were during interviews giving cocky and humorous responses to a few questions but most were followed by mumbling and silence. This confidence was backed up by the albums attitude and overall vibe.

Songs like Waterfall and Made of Stone are examples of Ian Browns imaginative and meaningful lyrics that made The Stone Roses so loved in England. But its songs like I Am The Resurrection that really cemented the band as a legendary band in music history. The drums are loud and make it sound like the songs has a message and the bassline is consistent bouncy but its really the lyrics and guitar riffs that make this the standout song on the album. Both the vocals and the guitar add all the buildup to the song whether it be Ian Browns passionate singing declaring he's the resurrection or John Squires smooth and melodic guitar riff that carries the song into the final chorus which is followed by a roughly 4 minute long guitar solo and jam session.

The National gig review

The National at Hammersmith Apollo

The National (who are currently touring their new album Sleep Well Beast) gave the audience a energetic yet relaxing performance. This is largely due to the setlist and the variation of songs some being depressing and melancholy and others being fast and loud. Matt Berninger (singer, songwriter) has a baritone voice that fits perfectly with the dark songs he chooses to perform live. Even though he gives off a very isolated and lonely persona due to his songwriting, he seems to interact with the audience and his bandmates very well. He'd fill up drinks and send them flying into the audience and several times he was almost dragged into the audience due to him getting too close to them and then in the encore he decided to run into the audience whilst the band finished the song.

In my opinion either Matt Berninger or the two twins(Aaron and Bryce Dessner)  who both play guitar and keyboard are the standout performers. The singers voice is definitely the leading element that makes the music so chilling but the two guitarists have good chemistry when it comes down to playing and both use very unique technics to make the music standout and add another level of depth.

The National also use brass instruments in their live performances that make it feel comfortable and warm. All the instruments fit well together. The National is primarily an indie genre.

I was very impressed with the overall feeling of the performance and enjoyed it. I liked hearing the songs that I didn't know by them. One thing I would take from there performance would be the fact that lighting adds a lot to the performance. The National got to perform at the Hammersmith four times and this is largely due to the fact the latest album they released got to number 1 on the charts. Many people are saying that as the band gets older there albums keep getting better and better.

The two main groups of people who attended the concert were college students or middle aged people.
