Career Goals

I'm taking a year off to continue working with other musicians as well as get a job and possibly go travelling. If music doesn't really take off I'll go to uni and continue studying music production or do an apprenticeship that allows me to develop my music skills.

Portfolio Plan

My portfolio research is going to consist of looking up news articles about androgyny and David Bowie as well as artists involved in modern indie scenes like Boy Pablo, Gus Dapperton and others. I want to look at old interviews with Bowie as well as news articles. I'll use a lot of biographical sources for Bowie as I need to be able to say how I could mimic his career to give myself an opportunity at success.

Midi to maxi Task

Week 1: During this week I decide the tracks I am going to be converting into live instruments. I am going to be converting the one's which I feel like are getting closer to being finished, so I'll be choosing these ones.
Week 2: This week I started attempting to record the drums and I used a sm57 to record the snare and hats as the polar pattern allows for isolating singular hits, I used an akg for the kick as it is a kick drum mic and picks up the best bass sound.

Week 3: This week I spent it finding and teaching someone how to play the piano melody on my track. I got Dean to learn it and next week I've booked studio so I can record it.

Week 4: This week I went into the recording studio and used a sennheisere606 and an sm57 to record the piano. I wanted to get different sounds for the piano but after reviewing the audio I can say that its not the sound I wanted. The sm57 is suited for picking up on quick attacks and guitars. The piano is missing out on a lot of the low-end which is needed for a piano. If I was to do this again I'd choose more mics which are suited towards the low-end and also probably do a stereo recording.

Week 5: This week I spent it re-recording the drums as I had lost my initial recordings and had to redo it. I had to use a sm57 on my drum kit at home as I had no way of going to the recording studio this week. I recorded each drum piece individually as I don't have a audio interface capable of multiple mic recording right now. Recording each drum piece individually takes a lot of the naturalness away from the overall sound of the kit so this is something I have learned to avoid as it doesn't really work for tracks like this.

Week 6: This week I used the sennheisere606 to record a bass guitar, I chose this as I feel like it would be a good mic for an amped rig. I played the bass guitar and I feel like it could've been played better as I'm not that good at bass.

Song 1 tracks:   Week 7; This week I began recording audio for my next track. I went to the studio and used a sm57 to record a guitar through an amp. I decided to do this as the first track features a guitar on it recorded in the same fashion and I quite like the sound.

Week 8: This week I went to the studio to record the drums, I used the same set up I did for the previous track apart from this time I didn't loose it.

Week 9: This week I recorded a bass guitar in my cabin through my amp using an sm57. This hasn't produced the best result though whether it be because my amp isn't of good quality or the guitar.
